fix: close the correctness gaps before the next release - #443
BEGIN_COMMIT_OVERRIDE
fix(git): hold a live edit made while a GitTarget's render fidelity is pending, instead of dropping it (#443)
A live edit that arrived while its GitTarget's render fidelity was pending was lost, and since the gate is per GitTarget this happened to every collection while one replayed (a new collection, or all of them at operator start). Such edits are now held and committed in order, with their authors, once the gate opens. A divergence still drops them. The hold is bounded by 10 minutes per GitTarget and by the branch's retained-byte budget; past either, the held edits are counted in git_writes_dropped_total and a fresh snapshot of the GitTarget commits the current state.
END_COMMIT_OVERRIDE
Closes the five release-gate work packages from the review of #442: edits that escaped repair tracking, applies that crossed the snapshot barrier too early, live edits dropped for good while render fidelity was pending, applier verdicts that lost intent or repeated a sync, and the recovery and migration checks.
Applier barrier and flush (R1, R4, F-d, F-a)
R1. A flush now records every API edit decided after its mark, per GitTarget (flushEdits on the loop). An applier that comes due while the flush waits for its publication is sent in that flush, and its apply window holds every edit since the mark. Before, it recorded from when it joined. An edit decided in between was taken for the apply landing, and no Repair put it back.
R4. The watch side keeps each GitTarget's settled-snapshot record under a generation. A branch worker's replacement restarts the record of every GitTarget it served (RestartInitialSnapshots), and a snapshot the old worker answers late settles nothing. The new worker asks no applier for anything until the replacement was acknowledged. Before, it read the old worker's record and could apply before the folder was rebuilt.
F-d. The barrier also requires every covered GitTarget's folder to be on the branch. A GitTarget that named its claim after its snapshots settled empty had no folder. The worker now asks for one fresh snapshot, whose resync creates the folder, and uses it even while Git is ahead, since the held apply would wait on it.
F-a. A hold is visible. The worker logs each applier the barrier holds back at Info when the hold begins, changes reason or lifts. The new appliers_held gauge counts them.
Live edits held while render fidelity is pending (Fix 2a, F-b, F-c)
A live event that met a pending gate was dropped. The gate is per GitTarget, so an edit to any collection was lost while another collection replayed: a new or restarted collection, every collection at operator start, or a snapshot F3 discarded (F-b). Now (internal/git/render_fidelity_hold.go):
The event is judged on arrival (ownership, the apply windows) and held. When the gate opens, held events go first, in order, and are committed with their authors. A divergence still drops them.
An applied snapshot of a collection supersedes that collection's events held before the snapshot was taken off the queue. A DELETE of an object the snapshot does not hold is kept, because under the default prune mode a snapshot never removes a document.
A held create is noted for adoption when it is released or superseded (F-c). Noting it on arrival would send the CatchUp before the create is in any commit, which stamps nothing.
An apply sent while events are held applies a commit without them. Its window holds them as edits from the send, so the applier's write over one is withheld, and its Repair waits until the edit is released or superseded into Git. A Repair sent earlier would apply a commit without the edit and be spent. A pending one reads as Git ahead, so F3 would discard the snapshot the gate is waiting for.
The hold is bounded: 10 minutes per GitTarget, and the branch's retained-byte budget, which held events count against. Past either limit, the worker drops what it held, counts it in git_writes_dropped_total{reason="render_fidelity_pending"}, and asks for a fresh snapshot. The log says how many deletions were among the dropped events, since a snapshot brings those back only under Always.
Atomic writes are still dropped at a closed gate. Nothing produces them in production.
This also removes the second window behind the flaky audit-route override e2e spec.
Apply classification (F-e, F2, A2)
F-e. Clock-skew tests run each case with the API server 2s behind through 2s ahead. One case lost an edit: with the server clock behind, a late apply over a newer edit was dated before the send, taken for an undo, and its revert mirrored. Now, once the window has recorded an edit of the object, an undo is told from a late apply by that edit's time, which is the same server clock. No one-second grace was added, because a grace would withhold a real undo. The remaining limits are documented in apply_window.go and listed in docs/TODO.md.
F2. A Flux fetch ends once the artifact holds the commit, or once a stamp written over ours was handled. Before, the request failed after the whole wait.
A2. An Argo CD sync whose token a later sync wiped is judged by status.history. An entry counts when it names our commit and initiatedBy: gitops-reverser, and was recorded after the operation was set: by history id. Such a sync is Succeeded. Before, it was read as failed and synced again, so hooks ran twice. A recovered operation never read the history, so no entry proves it: an entry's time is the controller's clock, and with it ahead an earlier sync of the commit would pass for ours and skip the apply. Its update is settled as never made and the commit is synced again, a repeat rather than a skipped apply.
Recovery and migration
The render-fidelity e2e spec now goes through the recovery docs/configuration.md documents. It repairs the folder in Git, sets reconcile.configbutler.ai/requestedAt, and expects three things: RenderMatchesLive=True, the live state the gate kept out landing in Git, and a later edit being mirrored.
docs/UPGRADING.md was checked against v0.53.0..HEAD, and six statements were corrected:
Step 3: the chart rejects a leftover clusterProvider key, so the step now maps each old value to its new one.
Steps 5 and 6: a GitTarget or claim that omitted kubeProviderRef must name local.
allowedGitBranches is optional, not required.
quickstart.enabled adds a grant; it does not replace the default.
GitBranch.spec.allowedGitTargets and docs/configuration.md no longer say that a list without from: Same excludes the local namespace. The local namespace is admitted only if the list grants it access.
docs/TODO.md drops what this resolves. The loud-rejection fields and CRD wording move out of the release gate into cleanup. The automatic-recovery item keeps its dependency on the retained-intent ordering barrier.
F3: a Flux fetch is made before the hold is checked.
The apply window's remaining clock limits; see the comment in apply_window.go.
Testing
task lint and task test pass.
New unit tests: TestApplierEchoes_AnApplierThatJoinsAFlushHoldsTheEditsSinceItsMark, TestInitialSnapshots_AReplacedWorkerStartsOver, TestServiceAppliers_AReplacedWorkerAsksNothingUntilItsGitTargetsWereTold, TestApplierEchoes_AFolderNotOnTheBranchIsCreatedBeforeItsApplierIsAsked, TestRenderFidelityHold_*, TestApplyWindow_ClockSkew, TestFluxRequest_AFetchStampedOverEndsWithTheirs, TestArgoCD_AGoneTokenIsJudgedByTheHistory and TestArgoCD_NoHistoryEntryProvesARecoveredSync.
I made each fix's test fail by reverting that fix (R1, the F-d snapshot exemption, adoption on supersede).
Live edits are now held in order while render fidelity is pending, then applied when it is restored. If fidelity diverges or the hold exceeds its limits, edits are dropped and a fresh snapshot is requested.
Branch applies now wait for required snapshots and missing folders to be ready, helping prevent stale or incomplete updates.
Flux and Argo CD sync requests now better recognize when the requested commit has been applied, including when request status changes during reconciliation.
New Features
Added an appliers_held metric to show how many branch applies are waiting on initial snapshots.
Documentation
Updated upgrade guidance for provider settings and Git target references, and clarified grant behavior.
… restart a replaced worker's snapshots
R1: a flush records the API edits decided after its mark per GitTarget, not
per applier due when it began. An applier that comes due while the flush
waits for its publication is sent in the same flush, so its window now holds
every edit since the mark; before, an edit decided between the mark and its
joining was taken for the apply landing, and no Repair put it back.
R4: the watch side keeps each GitTarget's settled-snapshot record under a
generation. A branch worker's replacement restarts the record of every
GitTarget it served, a snapshot the old worker answers late settles nothing,
and the new worker asks no applier for anything until that recovery was
delivered. Before, it read the old worker's record, passed the barrier at
once, and could ask for a folder the new repository does not hold.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…, and say when the barrier holds
F-d: the initial-snapshot barrier now also requires the folder of every
GitTarget an applier covers to be on the branch. A GitTarget that named its
claim after its snapshots settled empty had none, and its applier was asked to
apply a missing path. The worker asks for one fresh snapshot of it, whose
resync creates the folder, and uses that snapshot even while Git is ahead,
since the apply held for the folder would wait on it.
F-a: a hold is no longer silent. Each applier the barrier holds a reason back
for is logged at Info when the hold begins, changes reason or lifts, and
counted in the new appliers_held gauge.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
… by what ran
A Flux fetch waited only for its own token on the GitRepository. When
another stamp replaced it, source-controller never handled ours, and the
request failed after the whole wait though the artifact held the commit.
The fetch now ends once the artifact holds the commit, or once the stamp
written over ours was handled.
An Argo CD sync whose operationState a later sync replaced read as gone,
so Failed, and the worker synced the commit again, running its hooks
twice. A status.history entry of the commit, initiated by GitOps
Reverser, recorded since the operation was set (above the history id the
Application held then, or for a recovered operation, started no earlier
than its request's second) is now that sync succeeding.
The apply window compared an applier's managedFields time, the API
server's clock, with the operator's send. With the server clock behind,
an apply over a newer edit was dated before the send, taken for an undo,
and its revert mirrored. With an edit recorded, the window now tells the
undo from the edit's time alone. Clock-skew tests cover both directions.

… release gate
A written allowedGitTargets list admits the local namespace only if it
grants it access: Names, Selector or All can, so "without from: Same"
never meant "shut out".
The 0.53.0 upgrade procedure now says that the chart's schema rejects
leftover clusterProvider values and maps each to its kubeProvider
value, that spec.kubeProviderRef is required where 0.53.0 filled in the
"default" provider, and that allowedGitBranches is optional with no
default rather than required.
The TODO release gate drops the loud-rejection fields and the CRD
wording (cleanup, not release defects), and the automatic render
fidelity recovery keeps its dependency on the retained-intent ordering
barrier.

A live event that met a pending render-fidelity gate was dropped for good:
the watch had moved past it. The gate is per GitTarget, so an edit to any
collection was lost while another one replayed (a new or restarted
collection, every collection at operator start, a snapshot F3 discarded).
Such an event is now judged as it arrives (ownership, the apply windows) and
held. Once the gate opens, the held events go first, in order, and are
committed with their authors. A divergence drops them, as before. An applied
snapshot of a collection supersedes the events of it held before it was taken
off the queue, except a DELETE of an object it does not hold: under the
default prune mode a snapshot never removes a document. A held create is
noted for adoption when it is released or superseded, not when it arrives,
so the CatchUp follows a flush that publishes it (F-c).
The hold is bounded: 10 minutes per GitTarget, and the branch's
retained-byte budget, which held events count against. Past either, what was
held is dropped and counted in git_writes_dropped_total, and a fresh snapshot
of the GitTarget is asked for, which commits the current state as the
operator. Atomic writes are still dropped at a closed gate.

…lity folder
The render-fidelity spec stalls a GitTarget on a Flux postBuild token. It
now repairs the folder in Git, sets reconcile.configbutler.ai/requestedAt,
and expects RenderMatchesLive=True, the live state the closed gate kept out
in Git, and a later edit mirrored: the way out docs/configuration.md gives.
docs/TODO.md drops what this branch resolves (R1, R4, #428's override, the
live-edit hold, F-a to F-e, F2, A2) and keeps what is left: the #441 and
#419 changelog overrides, F3, and the apply window's remaining clock limits.

…D sync
A recovered operation never read the Application's history, so it is
judged by time. An entry started in the second it was asked for may be an
earlier sync of the same commit, and taking it skipped an apply the request
never made. Only an entry started in a later second proves it now; a
same-second one leaves the commit to be synced again.
UPGRADING names the chart's provider by kubeProvider.name, local by
default, wherever the steps reference it.

… in Git
An apply sent while a GitTarget's live events were held for its render
fidelity applied a commit without them. Its window recorded only the
flush's edits, so the applier's write over a held edit was taken for the
apply landing: the edit later reached Git with the cluster still running
the overwritten value, and no Repair followed.
The window now holds the held events as edits from the send, so that
write is withheld. Its Repair waits for the edit to reach Git, by release
or by a snapshot superseding it. Sent at once, it would apply a commit
without the edit and be spent; pending, it reads as Git ahead, so F3
would discard the very snapshot the gate waits for.

…go CD sync
A recovered operation never read the Application's history, so it was
judged by when an entry started. That is the controller's clock: with it
ahead, an earlier sync of the same commit read as started after the
request, and a request that crashed before its update was Succeeded with
the sync never made. No entry proves a recovered sync now; its update is
settled as never made, and the worker asks again. A recovered sync that
ran and was then replaced is synced again: a repeat, never a skipped
apply. An operation this process set is still proven by the history id.
