An audit of the SQL adapters (MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite) and the MongoDB adapter for SQL injection and its MongoDB equivalents: operator, field-name and regex injection, and server-side JavaScript.

No classic injection turned up. Every value reaches the engine as a binding, every identifier goes through filter() and an escaping quote(), and nothing builds $where, $function or other server-side JavaScript. What the audit did find is a set of places where a name the caller chooses reaches a column or field the storage keeps for the document itself, or reaches a MongoDB operator, plus two query-composition bugs. Each commit fixes one of them and adds regression tests that fail on main.

Fixed

1. Attribute names reached the storage columns (all adapters). filter() keeps underscores, so a name such as _tenant addressed the column a document's own tenant is stored in:

  • upsertDocuments(increase: '_tenant') never checked its attribute. On every adapter it added the tenant to itself, which under shared tables moved the stored document into another tenant's rows; increase: '_createdAt' rewrote when it was created.
  • increaseDocumentAttribute() / decreaseDocumentAttribute() checked the attribute only when attributes are defined, so in a schemaless MongoDB collection they moved documents between tenants the same way.
  • A schemaless MongoDB document accepted any key: _id chose its $sequence, _tenant was stored as its tenant without shared tables, and a bulk updateDocuments() wrote _permissions, _uid and _createdAt straight past the permission and structure checks.

Storage::isReserved() now names those columns. The attribute an upsert increases is checked the way an increase's is (a declared numeric attribute, and never a reserved column without defined attributes), and fails with Exception\NotFound. Structure refuses a reserved key in a schemaless document (Reserved attribute: "_id"). The SQL and MongoDB adapters also refuse to increase a reserved column, and MongoDB drops reserved keys from every record it writes, so the rule holds with validation skipped.

2. MongoDB ran operator-shaped cursor values and $-named fields.

  • A cursor matched the values of its earlier order attributes by bare equality. A stored value shaped like {"$gt": ""} therefore ran as that operator, and the page returned rows from before the cursor. Those values are now matched with $eq.
  • exists() / notExists() names and the elemMatch() attribute were used as given, so $comment or $where became a top-level query operator. count([Query::exists(['$comment'])]) matched every row, and exists(['$id']) matched none. These now map like every other filter.

3. SQLite's fulltext lookup crossed collections. FTS5 tables were found as <prefix>%_fts, and the prefix of notes also starts notes_private's tables:

  • A search on notes could read notes_private's index past its permissions, because a row there with the same sequence answered it.
  • Deleting notes dropped notes_private's FTS table and left its triggers failing every later write.

The lookup now matches the exact table name, and names read back from sqlite_master and PRAGMA go through quote().

4. Raw conditions escaped the tenant scope. A builder from Database::from() promises to stay within the selected tenant. But whereRaw('a = ? OR b = ?') and filter([Query::raw(...)]) compiled to _tenant IN (?) AND a = ? OR b = ?, which read, updated and deleted other tenants' rows. The scoped builders now enclose every raw condition in parentheses. The raw conditions the adapters write themselves are enclosed too, which changes their text but not their meaning. BuilderStatementTest's frozen statements are unchanged; the PostgreSQL vector statements that PostgresQueryBehaviorTest pins gain the parentheses.

Through Appwrite's API, only the schemaless _id key of (1) was reachable by clients. Appwrite strips $sequence from document data but not _id, so a client creating a DocumentsDB document could choose that document's $sequence. The rest is not reachable there:

  • its increment routes validate the attribute key;
  • it passes no increase;
  • bulk updates need an API key;
  • it uses neither from()/raw conditions nor SQLite.

Behaviour changes

  • A schemaless document with a key named exactly like a storage column (_id, _uid, _tenant, _permissions, _createdAt, _updatedAt, _collection, _deletedAt, _distance) now fails with Exception\Structure. Before, it was written over the document's own field. Importers that pass a source's _id through as data will now see that error and need to map or drop the key.
  • upsertDocuments(increase:) requires a declared numeric attribute when attributes are defined. Anything else used to fail in the engine.
  • exists(['$id']) and the other internal attributes now match on MongoDB. Before, they matched nothing.

Checked and found safe

  • Values. Comparison, IN, LIKE, regex, full-text, spatial (coordinates cast, WKT bound), pgvector, JSON containment, cursors, limit and offset are all bound or integer-typed.
  • Identifiers and DDL. Filter, select, order, group, aggregate, join and having identifiers go through filter() + quote() or the builder's escaping quote(). Object paths go through ObjectPath. Aliases, operators and interval values come from allowlists. DDL sizes, SRIDs and index lengths are typed; defaults are never written into DDL.
  • Writes. Every update operator's operand, bound and condition is bound, including the conflict clauses.
  • Permissions and tenancy. The permission and tenant filters on SQL and MongoDB cannot be escaped by user filters: they sit beside the user's $and, roles are bound, and object filters always stay under attr.path.
  • MongoDB. $-prefixed attributes and keys are escaped. startsWith / endsWith / contains escape their value with preg_quote into a fixed template. Values under $eq / $in / $lt etc. are literals. The client encodes with BSON\Document::fromPHP and never parses Extended JSON.

Not changed (follow-ups)

  • utopia-php/query: compileRaw(), rawWheres and JoinBuilder::whereRaw() should enclose raw conditions at the source. A raw ON condition through joinWhere() still binds looser than the scope's tenant condition appended to the same ON. Also, toRawSql() inlines bindings escaping only ', and Schema literal escaping is unsafe under GBK/SJIS/BIG5 connection charsets (only reachable through schema()).
  • containsAll() on a string attribute keeps 7.x semantics: each value is a LIKE pattern, so % and _ act as wildcards (MariaDB/MySQL/Postgres). Escaping them is a behaviour change worth its own PR.
  • MariaDB/MySQL LIKE relies on the default \ escape, which NO_BACKSLASH_ESCAPES disables.
  • With validation skipped, a SQL document key that filters to _uid or _id overwrites them on create. Validation refuses it today.
  • Smaller items:
    • DDL runs several statements in one prepare, which keeps multi-statement execution enabled on every connection.
    • Some allowlist regexes end in $ without D; these are harmless, because quote() rejects control characters.
    • Postgres puts an unfiltered tenant into index names (app-controlled).
    • MongoDB regex() is passed through by design; consider a pattern length cap and maxTimeMS.

Test plan

  • New unit tests, all failing on main:
    • StorageTest::test_reserved_columns
    • StructureTest::test_reserved_keys_without_defined_attributes
    • MongoQueryFilterTest::testDollarNamesInExistsAndElemMatchAreMatchedAsFields and testACursorComparesTheValuesOfItsEarlierOrdersAsValues
    • SQLiteFulltextCollectionsTest
    • QueryBuilderTenancyTest::testAnOrInARawConditionReadsOnlyTheSelectedTenantsRows and testARawDeleteWithAnOrRemovesOnlyTheSelectedTenantsRows
  • New e2e tests, all failing on main:
    • DocumentTests::testIncreaseOfAStorageColumnIsRefused, on every adapter
    • SchemalessTests::testSchemalessDocumentCannotWriteAStorageField
  • Locally:
    • Pint passes on the changed files, and PHPStan (max level) reports no errors.
    • The unit suite passes: 13,154 tests, run with paratest --functional as CI runs it.
    • The e2e suite passes for every adapter in the CI matrix: MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, MongoDB, Memory, Pool, Redis, Mirror, SharedTables/{MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, MongoDB, Redis} and Schemaless/MongoDB.

The adapters filter() an attribute a caller names into its column, and
filter() keeps underscores, so a name such as `_tenant` reached a column
the storage keeps for the document itself:

- upsertDocuments(increase:) never checked its attribute, on any
  adapter. Increasing `_tenant` added the tenant to itself, which under
  shared tables moved the stored document into another tenant's rows;
  increasing `_createdAt` rewrote when it was created.
- increaseDocumentAttribute() and decreaseDocumentAttribute() checked
  the attribute only when attributes are defined, so in a schemaless
  MongoDB collection they moved a document to another tenant the same
  way.
- A schemaless MongoDB document took any key: `_id` chose its
  $sequence, `_tenant` was stored as its tenant without shared tables,
  and updateDocuments() wrote `_permissions`, `_uid` and `_createdAt`
  past the permission and structure checks.

Storage::isReserved() names those columns. The attribute an upsert
increases is now checked as an increase's is: a declared numeric
attribute when attributes are defined, and never a reserved column
without them (Exception\NotFound). Structure refuses a reserved key in a
schemaless document ("Reserved attribute"). The SQL and MongoDB adapters
refuse to increase a reserved column, and MongoDB drops reserved keys
from every record it writes, so the rule holds with validation skipped.

…ds as data

- A cursor matched the values of its earlier order attributes by bare
  equality, so a stored value shaped like {"$gt": ""} ran as that
  operator and the page returned rows from before the cursor. The values
  are now matched with $eq.
- exists() and notExists() named their fields, and elemMatch() its
  attribute, as given, so a name such as `$comment` or `$where` was read
  as a top-level query operator: count() of exists(['$comment']) matched
  every row, and exists(['$id']) matched none. They now map $id,
  $sequence and the timestamps to their storage fields and escape any
  other $-name, as every other filter already did.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The FTS5 tables of a collection were found as `<prefix>%_fts`, and the
prefix of collection `notes` also starts the tables of `notes_private`.
A search on `notes` could read `notes_private`'s index past its
permissions, since that collection's row with the same sequence answered
it, and deleting `notes` dropped `notes_private`'s tables and left their
triggers failing every later write to it.

The lookup now matches the prefix, exactly the 16 characters of the
hashed attribute set, and the suffix. Table and index names read back
from sqlite_master and PRAGMA are quoted with quote() instead of being
wrapped in backticks as they are.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A builder from Database::from() keeps every statement within the
selected tenant, but a raw condition was ANDed with the tenant condition
as written: whereRaw('a = ? OR b = ?') and filter([Query::raw(...)])
compiled to `_tenant IN (?) AND a = ? OR b = ?`, which read, updated and
deleted another tenant's rows.

The scoped builders now enclose every raw condition in parentheses. The
raw conditions the adapters write themselves are enclosed too, which
changes their text but not their meaning: the PostgreSQL vector
statements PostgresQueryBehaviorTest pins gain the parentheses.

Major follow-up Restrict FTS table discovery to FTS virtual tables.

1181-1185: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Restrict FTS table discovery to FTS virtual tables.

The LIKE pattern in findFulltextTables() matches any table named {prefix} + 16 characters + _fts. An ordinary collection named a_0123456789abcdef_fts creates a table with that shape. deleteCollection('a') then drops that table and its documents. Add a condition on the stored DDL so that only virtual tables match. The FTS tables this adapter creates begin with CREATE VIRTUAL TABLE.

Suggested fix
         $statement = $this->prepare("
             SELECT name FROM sqlite_master
             WHERE type='table'
               AND name LIKE :_name ESCAPE '\\'
+ AND sql LIKE 'CREATE VIRTUAL TABLE%'
         ");

Selecting a schemaless $-prefixed attribute, such as $where, sends that name unchanged in the Mongo projection. Writes store it as _where, so the projection omits the stored value. getAttributeProjection() should escape $-prefixed selections the same way filterField() does.

Nitpick Add a PostgreSQL test for a grouped raw filter.

67-67: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a PostgreSQL test for a grouped raw filter.

The raw OR filter test in tests/unit/QueryBuilderTenancyTest.php runs only on the SQLite builder. The PostgreSQL builder overrides compileFilter() in src/Database/Builder/Postgres.php. It groups raw filters only through the enclose() call at line 67. No PostgreSQL test covers a raw filter, so removing that call would not fail any current assertion.

Add a PostgreSQL case that passes a Query::raw() filter containing OR. Assert that the compiled WHERE clause wraps that expression in parentheses. Use the filter() path. whereRaw() already encloses its own input.

The $ to _ swap ran after the storage keys were stripped, so a schemaless
`$uid` passed the strip and landed on `_uid`: a bulk update renamed every
matched document and an upsert overwrote the id it had just set. A field
is now kept only when its stored name, after the swap, is not a storage
field, or it is the document's own $id, $tenant, $permissions or
timestamp. createDocument and createDocuments also drop those fields from
the documents they return, so they never report a value that was not
stored.

Orders, cursors and selections now name a $-prefixed field by its stored
`_` name, as filters already did, so ordering by `$rank` no longer sorts
by a missing `rank` field and cursor pagination no longer ends early.

Map $-prefixed increment targets to their stored _ field.

writableColumn() calls filter(), which strips $. On a schemaless Mongo collection, $rank becomes rank, but the document stores that field as _rank. increaseDocumentAttribute() then increments rank and leaves _rank unchanged. In upsertDocuments(increase:), rank gets $inc by 0, and _rank is overwritten with the incoming value instead of being incremented. Apply the $-to-_ mapping before filtering in both Mongo paths.

Assert that deleting notes drops its FTS table.

The test checks only search results and the surviving lookalike document. deleteCollection() drops each table that findFulltextTables() returns (src/Database/Adapter/SQLite.php:669-687). If discovery returns no table for notes, the notes FTS table stays in the database. Search falls back to LIKE and returns the same IDs, so this test still passes.

Add an assertion that the notes virtual table is absent after deleteCollection('notes'). Query sqlite_master for a type = 'table' row whose name matches the notes FTS prefix, the 16-character key, and the _fts suffix, and whose sql starts with CREATE VIRTUAL TABLE.

Store the PDO handle in a property. setUp() passes it as a local argument, so the test cannot query the adapter's database.

Cover a single-document $uid update in the write-guard test.

The shared schemaless test covers $uid in create, bulk updateDocuments(), and upsertDocuments(). It does not call single-document Database::updateDocument(). Mongo::updateDocument() removes storage keys with withoutStorageKeys() before it builds the update record (src/Database/Adapter/Mongo.php, line 1756). Removing that call would write _uid for a single-document update, and this test would still pass. The test runs in the MongoDB schemaless lane only.

Add a single-document `$uid` write-guard case to the schemaless test, calling
`Database::updateDocument()` for an existing ID with a different `$uid` and
updated title. Assert the original ID remains, the renamed ID is absent, and the
title is updated; keep the existing bulk-update assertions unchanged.

Minor comments:
Review comments at @src/Database/Adapter/Mongo.php:
- Around line 3273-3276: Map `$`-prefixed increment targets to their stored `_`
field before filtering in both `increaseDocumentAttribute()` and the
`upsertDocuments(increase:)` path. Preserve the mapped field name through the
increment operation so schemaless documents increment `_rank` rather than
`rank`, and do not overwrite the stored value with the incoming value.

Review comments at @src/Database/Adapter/SQLite.php:
- Line 1182: Update the SQL filter in findFulltextTables() to return only
matching virtual tables whose stored definition uses FTS5. Preserve the existing
collection-name pattern and ensure non-FTS5 virtual tables are excluded before
deleteCollection() drops the returned names.

writableColumn() stripped the $, so an increase of a schemaless `$rank`
added to a `rank` field that does not exist while `_rank` kept its value,
and an upsert with increase overwrote `_rank` with the incoming value. The
name is now mapped as filters map it before the reserved-column check,
which also refuses `$uid` and `$id` as increase targets.

Any virtual table named like the index, such as an rtree created through a
raw query, was still dropped with the collection.

second pass: increases on a $-named field now map to the stored _ field (and $uid/$id are refused as targets), fts lookup requires USING fts5( so other virtual tables survive a delete, added the single updateDocument $uid case and an assert that deleting notes drops its own fts table
