fix(ldap): guard shared connection with a mutex during rebind - #1192
shivampwm2020 wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
The LDAP service shares a single connection between authentication, directory searches and the connection heartbeat. The heartbeat's rebind path closed the old connection unconditionally, so an authentication that was mid-bind could have the socket dropped underneath it, failing with `LDAP Result Code 200 "Network Error": ldap: response channel closed`. Add a sync.RWMutex around all use of the shared connection: - Authenticate() performs the user bind and the service-account rebind atomically while holding the lock, so the connection is never left bound as an unprivileged user and cannot be swapped mid-authentication. - reconnect() dials the replacement before touching shared state, then swaps and closes the old connection under the lock; it therefore waits for any in-flight authentication to finish instead of interrupting it. - connect()/heartbeat() take the same lock (heartbeat releases it before returning so a following reconnect can acquire it). Closes tinyauthapp#1191

…iew) The blockSearch hook closed searchStarted and returned immediately, so the fake server could answer the in-flight search before the test goroutine ran conn.Close(). When that happened conn.Search succeeded and require.Error failed at random, breaking go test ./... and make test-race intermittently. Hold the hook open on a release channel that is closed only after conn.Close(); a t.Cleanup guard closes it if the test fails early.

Thank you for the pull request. While I appreciate the effort, I would prefer contributions to be carefully reviewed and understood before being submitted. We don't need hundreds of lines of additional code and testing infrastructure for something that can be addressed with a much simpler solution. AI-generated code is welcome, but it still needs to be properly reviewed and justified. I can generate code myself, so the actual value of a contribution is the thought and understanding behind it. Closing this as unnecessarily complex. |
Problem
The LDAP service shares a single
*ldapgo.Connbetween authentication, directory searches and the periodic connection heartbeat. On a heartbeat failure the rebind path inreconnect()closed the current connection unconditionally, then dialed a replacement:If a user authentication (or a search) was in flight at that moment, the socket was closed underneath it and the request failed. The failure seen in practice is:
A second, related defect:
BindService/Bindleft the shared connection bound as the user between calls, relying on a deferred rebind inauth_service.gothat ran outside any lock — so a heartbeat could observe (and drop) a connection that was bound as an unprivileged user.Root cause
There was no synchronization around access to
ldap.conn. Locking existed only inBindService(rebind=true)andBind, and the heartbeat'sreconnect()closed the old connection without taking it, so a rebind could race an in-progress authentication and invalidate its connection mid-request.Fix
Add a
sync.RWMutexguarding all use of the shared connection:Authenticate(userDN, password)— performs the user bind and the service-account rebind atomically while holding the lock. The connection is never left bound as an unprivileged user, and it cannot be swapped mid-authentication.auth_service.gonow calls this instead of the old two-stepBind+ deferredBindService.reconnect()— dials the replacement before touching shared state, then takes the lock, binds it, swaps it in and closes the old connection. It therefore waits for any in-flight authentication to finish before dropping the old connection, which is exactly the behaviour the issue asks for.connect()/heartbeat()/GetUserInfo/GetUserCount/GetUserGroups— take the same lock.heartbeat()releases it before returning so a followingreconnect()can acquire it.Closes #1191.
Testing
New tests exercise the real
go-ldapclient against an in-process fake LDAP server (real*ldapgo.Connvalues and realClose()semantics) — no external directory required.internal/service/ldap_service_race_test.go:TestReconnectWaitsForInFlightAuthentication— holds a user bind open mid-authentication, firesreconnect()concurrently, and asserts the reconnect blocks until the bind completes and the in-flight authentication is not broken.TestUnsynchronizedReconnectReproducesRace— reproduces the pre-fix failure mode directly (closing the connection mid-request yieldsresponse channel closed), so the regression test above cannot pass for the wrong reason.TestAuthenticateRestoresServiceBindOnFailure— asserts the service-account bind is restored as part of authentication.TestConcurrentAuthAndReconnectNoClosedConn— 8 auth workers × 25 iterations racing 25 reconnects; asserts no request observes a closed connection.TestHeartbeatUsesSharedConnection.Pre-fix / post-fix evidence:
Authenticate,TestReconnectWaitsForInFlightAuthenticationfails with exactly the reported error:failed to rebind to ldap service account: LDAP Result Code 200 "Network Error": ldap: response channel closedgo test -race.Repo checks:
go build ./...— cleango vet ./...(make vet) — cleango test ./...— all packages passmake test-race— passesgofmt -l internal/service/— cleanNo pre-existing test failures were observed on the affected packages; the full suite was green before attributing results to this change.
