Pull-through links on the simple pages used ?redirect=<upstream url>, and the content app fetched whatever url the client sent using the remote's credentials and proxy. Links now carry a signed token bound to the remote, filename, upstream url and sha256, and pull-through downloads are validated against that sha256. 🌐 Web query:
Pulpcore 3.105 3.129 content handler RemoteArtifact ContentArtifact get_downloader existing artifact source
💡 Result:
For the **default content handler**, the key behavior is:
- It looks up a `RemoteArtifact` by the requested remote and URL. If found, it uses that row’s `content_artifact`: serves its `Artifact` if one is already attached; otherwise streams the `ContentArtifact` using its associated remote artifact(s). If no matching `RemoteArtifact` exists, the pull-through path creates a new `ContentArtifact` and `RemoteArtifact` and streams it. ([github.com](https://github.com/pulp/pulpcore/blob/main/pulpcore/content/handler.py?utm_source=openai))
- For an existing `ContentArtifact` without an `Artifact`, the handler tries its associated `RemoteArtifact` records. That is the on-demand path; when configured to save, a successful download can be stored and associated with the `ContentArtifact`. ([github.com](https://github.com/pulp/pulpcore/blob/main/pulpcore/content/handler.py?utm_source=openai))
- `Remote.get_downloader(remote_artifact=ra)` is a separate plugin API for constructing a downloader from a `RemoteArtifact`; it uses that record’s URL and can apply its expected size/checksum validation. ([pulpproject.org](https://pulpproject.org/pulpcore/docs/dev/reference/code-api/base-models/?utm_source=openai))
**Version caveat:** I found Pulpcore release evidence for the 3.105 line, but not a 3.129 release/source in the searched results. So this does **not** establish a 3.105-versus-3.129 implementation comparison; the handler source result is from `main`, not a pinned release tag. ([github.com](https://github.com/pulp/pulpcore/releases?utm_source=openai))

Override a reused artifact’s digest with the current signed digest.
When pulpcore reuses a RemoteArtifact whose ContentArtifact has no file, it calls PythonRemote.get_downloader(remote_artifact=remote_artifact). The current guard preserves a different truthy digest from an earlier request. Pulpcore then configures checksum validation from that stale value instead of the digest in the current signed token. This can reject valid content or accept content that matches only the stale digest.

pip appends .metadata to the whole link, so with a query string the wheel and its metadata share one request path and the content cache can serve one for the other. When Redis is available, the simple page now stores each file's upstream url and digests under the remote and links to the plain filename. Signed ?pt= links remain the fallback without Redis. fixes pulp#1428 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Note
Posted by an agent on behalf of @gerrod3.
Pull-through links on the simple pages were
<filename>?redirect=<upstream url>, and the content app downloaded whatever url the client put there, using the remote's credentials, proxy and TLS settings. Downloads were never checked against the upstream hashes. The content app now only downloads files the simple page listed for the distribution's remote, and checks them against the upstream sha256. There are two link formats, depending on whether Redis is available.
With Redis (
CACHE_ENABLED): plain filename linksWhen building the simple page, the upstream url, sha256 and metadata sha256 of every listed file are stored in a Redis hash keyed by the remote's pk and
pulp_last_updated, and the link is the plain<filename>.PythonRemote.get_remote_artifact_urllooks the requested filename up in that hash. A.metadatarequest uses the wheel's entry and its metadata sha256. Unknown files are a 404.EXPIRES_TTL+ 600s (the simple page'smax-age) and are refreshed whenever the page is rebuilt. Editing the remote drops them..metadatato the query string instead of the path pypa/pip#14357, PEP658 metadata URL calculation bug pypa/pip#12033).Without Redis: signed links
Links are
<filename>?pt=<token>. The token is signed with Django's signer and holds the remote pk, filename, upstream url, sha256 and metadata sha256 from the index:PythonRemote.get_remote_artifact_urlreturns the url only if the token is valid, belongs to the distribution's remote, and was issued for the requested file or its.metadata. Anything else is a 404..metadatato the token instead of the path, so that's detected from the token.?pt=links are also accepted when Redis is enabled, so already-served pages keep working. In both modes the upstream sha256 is set on the remote artifact before downloading, so content that doesn't match upstream is rejected.
Things to note:
?redirect=links, such as cached simple pages, return 404 after upgrading.SECRET_KEYinvalidates signed links handed out before the rotation.CACHE_ENABLED.This is a stopgap until pull-through can resolve plain filenames without Redis.
