feat: add expense comments with participant notifications - #796
Adds comments to expense details and an optional initial comment when creating an expense.
Notify the payer and expense participants when a comment is posted, excluding the author and uninvolved group members. Initial comments are saved with the expense without a separate comment notification.
Enforce author-only editing and deletion on the server, with actions available through right-click or mobile long-press menus.
Group comments by author with avatars. Own comments display “You,” align right, and use the primary background color.
Keep the initial-comment field hidden behind an icon toggle, with reserved space to prevent layout shifts.
Validation: TypeScript and targeted formatting/lint checks pass; 519 unit tests and six comment integration tests passed during implementation. Verified posting and presentation in the isolated workspace browser on desktop and mobile.
Add an optional initial comment when creating an expense, then view, add, edit, or delete comments on expense details. Comments support up to 5,000 characters; editing and deletion are available only for your own comments on active expenses.
Eligible expense participants receive a notification when a comment is added.
Expense payers can view expense details even when they have no net balance.
Style
Expense forms use a two-column layout for key fields.

Walkthrough
The expense API and interface now support adding, editing, and deleting expense comments. New expenses can include an optional initial comment. Comments are loaded in order, and adding a comment can notify other expense participants.

The expense schema accepts an optional initial comment. Server procedures add, edit, and delete comments, and expense details load ordered comments with creator information. Integration tests cover permissions, validation, persistence, and notifications.

The new-expense form accepts an optional comment of up to 5,000 characters. It clears the comment after successful submission or when the transaction is cleared.
Expense details display comments grouped by adjacent author. Users can add comments and edit or delete their own comments. The UI includes comment actions and English labels.
oss-apps/split-pro#457: That PR changes the default translation namespace, while this pull request adds comment strings only to common.json.

Explanation
The title "feat: add expense comments with participant notifications" matches the main change. The changeset adds expense comments (ExpenseComments component, comment procedures in commentService.ts, and the expense router changes) and sends push notifications to the payer and participants when a comment is posted. The title is concise, specific, and follows a conventional commit prefix.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #61 requests comments on an expense. ExpenseComments provides comment creation, editing, and deletion. commentProcedures validates and stores comments with author-only edit and delete checks. createExpense stores an optional initial comment. Integration tests cover comment creation, access control, validation, notifications, and deleted expenses. The issue does not require a separate leave-expense action.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed server code, expense UI, locale strings, reusable comment and context-menu components, and integration tests support expense comments, initial comments, author-only actions, notifications, or their presentation. The form layout change supports the initial-comment field. No change lacks a demonstrated connection to issue #61.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description states the purpose: comments in expense details and an optional initial comment on expense creation. It lists notification behavior, author-only edit and delete, author grouping, and the hidden initial-comment toggle. It reports validation results and includes screenshots. It references issue #61 with a closing keyword. The template's Checklist section is missing, and the Description and Demo sections use the template's structure in substance but the checklist items are not present. The description does not state whether the author read CONTRIBUTING.md, completed a self-review, or confirmed that the last commit passed pre-commit checks, and it does not explicitly say the author reviewed any AI-generated code. Those items are required by the template, so the author should add them.
Resolution
Add the template's Checklist section with each item checked or explicitly addressed: CONTRIBUTING.md read, self-review performed, unit tests added for the changes, last commit passed pre-commit checks, and AI-generated code reviewed. The description already covers the Description and Demo sections well, so no other content needs to change.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 8 functions across 14 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Do not await push delivery in the addComment mutation.
sendPushNotificationToUsers waits for every push subscription. It awaits the subscription lookup, then awaits Promise.all over all pushNotification calls, then awaits stale-subscription cleanup before it returns. addComment awaits that call, so its response waits for the slowest push endpoint. The app sets no timeout on these calls. A slow endpoint can delay the mutation response, and any UI refresh that follows it. The comment is already saved at that point.
The expense creation path already calls sendExpensePushNotification(...).catch(console.error) without await (src/server/api/services/splitService.ts:136). Use the same pattern here. The .catch still handles rejections.

Remove await from the sendPushNotificationToUsers call in addComment so the
mutation response does not wait for push delivery. Keep the existing
.catch(console.error) rejection handling and notification payload unchanged.
