feat(gooddata-sdk): add CREATE_DOCUMENT and publisher documents - #1923
The SDK knows the CREATE_DOCUMENT permission and carries Publisher documents, document templates and page templates through the declarative layout, disk storage, and gdc clone / gdc deploy. Before this, a layout read dropped all three, so a read followed by a layout put, a gdc deploy or a gooddata-pipelines restore deleted a workspace's documents. reports, reportTemplates, reportPageLayouts and computedAttributes are still not modelled, and an SDK put still wipes them.
A document as the layout API returns it, and as CatalogDeclarativePublisherDocument now keeps it through from_dict, to_api(), store_to_disk and load_from_disk (content trimmed):
The commits, in review order: the client regenerated against the backend's specs (generated, skim it), the CREATE_DOCUMENT read test, a fix to the generated client's discriminated oneOf handling, Base writing keyword-named attributes under the client's names, the three SDK models, disk store and load, the gooddata-code-convertors bump, Analytics-as-Code, the gooddata-eval snapshot fix, the round-trip test, the re-recorded cassettes, and the packages/gooddata-sdk/AGENTS.md entry.
Decisions
A document's period is typed; content stays an untyped mapping. period is CatalogPublisherDocumentPeriod, a union of CatalogAbsolutePublisherDocumentPeriod and CatalogRelativePublisherDocumentPeriod behind a structure hook, as dashboard permissions are, so a read gives from_ and the API's values instead of the client's _from and datetime.date. To write it, Base now puts an attrs attribute named after a Python keyword (from_) under the client's name (_from) at any depth; keys inside a dict value are left as they are. The rule and its one exception, an analytics object's content, are in packages/gooddata-sdk/AGENTS.md. content stays untyped because the Publisher format is still moving, and typing it would couple the SDK to each change:
keys the SDK does not know survive a read, store, load and put unchanged;
a new layout node, period or filter-reference type still needs a regenerated client, since the generated models validate it.
Only documents carry author fields. CatalogDeclarativePublisherDocument gets created_at, created_by, modified_at and modified_by from CatalogAnalyticsBaseMeta, like memory items. The templates get none, because the layout API exposes none on them (LX-3490).
The backend keeps the payload's createdAt / createdBy on put when createdAt is present, so a read with ACTIVITY_INFO excluded loses authorship on the next put.
The code form has no author fields, so gdc clone then gdc deploy re-stamps the creator to the deploying user.
Empty lists go out as [], like every other list in the layer.
The backend treats an absent list and [] alike on put, but omits the three keys from its responses when they are empty. The two tests that compare the SDK dictionary with the raw layout fill those keys on the raw side through one helper, and stay exact on every other key.
The generated client resolves a discriminated oneOf through its discriminator when built from Python names. Base.to_api() builds client models with Python names, and in that mode get_possible_classes replaced a discriminated composed model with all its members, so building a document layout node failed on the first member missing a required argument. The fix is in the custom template .openapi-generator/custom_templates/model_utils.mustache and the regenerated model_utils.py; it is the one change here to code shared by every model, and worth the tighter look.
A document whose version is not "2" is refused, not skipped.
Store and load raise a ValueError naming its type, id and version, as for any other refusal by the convertor. Store converts all three types before it creates the target folder, so store_aac_workspace_to_disk and get_and_store_aac_workspace write nothing when one is refused. A full gdc clone has by then already removed the old tree and written data sources, users and groups (cli/clone.py:58-68); PSDK-239 moves the removal after conversion.
Folder names follow the layout keys. documents/, document_templates/ and page_templates/ under analytics_model/ in the declarative store; documents/, documentTemplates/ and pageTemplates/ in the code form, until the gd CLI settles its own names (LX-3096). I would accept a rename here.
The cassettes are recorded on the SDK's staging environment with ENABLE_METRIC_PERMISSIONS and ENABLE_VISUALIZATION_PERMISSIONS off, and committed unedited.
With those flags on, the layout carries grants on metrics and visualization objects and metricExtensions / visualizationObjectExtensions lists, none of which the SDK models yet (PSDK-236), and the two raw-layout tests fail on them. An independent recording on a local stack agrees on every interaction and everything the tests assert; it differs only in the organization's region, dataCenter and allowedOrigins, the not-found error content type, and content-length.
What comes next
PSDK-236 — object permissions on metrics and visualization objects, and the two extension lists, in the declarative model. Until then the SDK drops them on read, store and gdc clone; a put without the key keeps the backend's permissions.
LX-3244 — removes the Report names (reports, reportTemplates, reportPageLayouts); computedAttributes stays out of scope.
LX-3490 — author fields on document and page templates in the layout API.
PSDK-238 — gdc clone and gdc deploy drop attribute hierarchies; pre-existing, not touched here.
PSDK-237 — the local docker-compose stack no longer starts on current images.
PSDK-239 — store_to_disk never clears a collection folder, so the file of a removed object keeps loading, and a full gdc clone removes the old tree before it fetches; true of every analytics and LDM collection on master, and the three publisher folders follow it.
PSDK-240 — the generated client fails to convert included objects of undiscriminated *Includes unions; pre-existing, not touched here.
Test plan
make -C packages/gooddata-sdk format lint type-check, and the same for gooddata-eval; tests-support is clean on format and lint, and its type-check reports three errors in files this PR does not touch, as on master.
TEST_ENVS=py314 make -C packages/gooddata-sdk test: 621 passed, 2 skipped, 3 xfailed, on the recorded cassettes unchanged. Absolute and relative periods are covered by unit tests in test_declarative_analytics_documents.py (typed read, to_dict, nested read and write, unknown type), since the cassettes hold absolute periods only, and the keyword rename by test_base_snake_dict.py. The regression test is test_documents_survive_store_load_and_put: it seeds a document with an absolute period and author fields, a document template and a page template, reads, stores, loads and puts the analytics model, and checks all three survive with the four author fields; against the SDK before the document models the workspace ends with no documents.
TEST_ENVS=py314 make -C packages/gooddata-pandas test (consumer): 347 passed, 7 skipped.
TEST_ENVS=py314 make -C packages/gooddata-eval test: 2649 passed, 1 skipped.
Cassettes: 14 re-recorded and 1 new, under packages/gooddata-sdk/tests/catalog/fixtures/. One more, demo_get_declarative_analytics_model_child.yaml, was re-recorded identical to master. The recorded put bodies carry documents with the four author fields, documentTemplates and pageTemplates.
Risk
low — the models and lists are additive and the backend accepts the three new keys on put. Two things change for users: gooddata-code-convertors is now >=11.66.0, and a folder cloned with an older SDK has no documents/, so gdc deploy from it sends documents: [] and deletes the workspace's documents; re-clone after upgrading. The client regeneration also brings unrelated backend changes (a required restrictedCount on ChangeAnalysisResult, a required storages list on DatabaseInstance, the removal of AmplitudeService) that no package uses.
Added SDK catalog support for analytics documents, document templates, and page templates, including workspace loading and saving.
Expanded document includes and audit metadata, and added document-creation permissions, storage references, model statistics in explain outputs, restricted-item counts, and feature-flag context fields.
Improvements
Increased supported webhook and dashboard URL lengths to 2,048 characters.
Clarified page-template ordering and pagination, localization filters, and storage selection. Snapshots serialize dates as ISO strings and reject unsupported values.
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of composed models with discriminators.
Regenerate the client from the staging specs, which carry the
backend's Publisher document permission and layout changes.
- CREATE_DOCUMENT joins every workspace permission enum that has
CREATE_VISUALIZATION, including the declarative single-workspace
and hierarchy permissions.
- DeclarativePublisherDocument gains created_at, created_by,
modified_at and modified_by. The document template and page
template layout types have no author fields.
The same download brings unrelated backend changes: a required
restrictedCount on ChangeAnalysisResult, a required storages list
(ObjectStorageRef) on DatabaseInstance, the MODEL_STATISTICS explain
type, relationships on JsonApiPublisherDocumentOut, and the removal
of AmplitudeService. No package's source uses the changed or removed
models.

gooddata-api-client/gooddata_api_client/model_utils.py:1555 Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Handle a missing constructor argument as a candidate mismatch in union conversion.
For include=["labels"], JsonApiPublisherDocumentOutIncludes has no discriminator. Its oneOf members are tried in order, starting with JsonApiDatasetOutWithLinks. When a label's attributes object is converted before the top-level type is rejected, JsonApiDatasetOutAttributes._from_openapi_data runs without type. It raises a plain TypeError. The except clause in attempt_convert_item does not catch that exception, so the whole include conversion fails before the label candidate is tried.
Make the candidate loop treat a TypeError from a missing constructor argument as a candidate mismatch. An alternative is to choose the attributes class from the matched resource type. Apply the change in the generator template and regenerate. Do not edit gooddata-api-client/ by hand.

Remove obsolete publisher files during AAC storage.
If gdc performs a granular workspace clone into an existing source directory, these loops leave YAML files for documents removed from the source workspace. A later deploy loads those files and puts the removed documents back into the workspace. Reconcile each publisher subdirectory with its current collection before writing. The granular clone does not clear the directory, and deploy reads the resulting AAC files. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Make the candidate loop treat a TypeError from a missing constructor argument as a candidate mismatch.
Reproduced, but it predates this PR: master's six undiscriminated *Includes unions fail the same way since 76344dd, and the SDK's include calls pass _check_return_type=False (content_service.py:83), so only raw-client callers hit it. Tracked in PSDK-240.
The failure is in the parent's widened attributes check (model_utils.py:193), not in the oneOf match. Catching TypeError only moves it to ApiValueError ... differ for fact, dataset, metric and visualization-object includes; the ticket records that and suggests narrowing by type.

@AdamPenaz Thanks for the correction. The parent’s widened property check and the candidate loop both predate this PR. The cited SDK catalog calls also disable return-type checks.
Your reproduction shows that catching TypeError alone is not a complete fix. I withdraw that recommendation. This PR adds a publisher-document include union, which can expose the existing issue to raw-client callers. I agree that PSDK-240 can track the underlying fix.
Would you also like a GitHub follow-up issue, or is PSDK-240 sufficient?

## Generated API Client
`gooddata-api-client/` is generated by the OpenAPI generator and must never be hand-edited;
the next regeneration would silently discard the change. To refresh it:
```bash
make api-client # download specs from localhost:3000, then generate
make api-client STAGING=1 # download from staging instead
make api-client-local # regenerate from the specs already in schemas/
```
Assert that a declarative single-workspace permission and a
workspace hierarchy permission named CREATE_DOCUMENT survive the
round trip: from_dict reads the assignment, to_api builds the client
model, and to_dict gives back the input. The regenerated client
allows the value, and the validation tests would otherwise only
cover it through the enum sweep, without a typed read of the
assignment.
The shared declarative_workspace_permissions.json fixture stays as
it is: the recorded PUT tests replay it, and adding the value there
would change their cassettes and the permission counts they assert.

Building a model whose property is a discriminated oneOf, such as the
Publisher document layout node, failed when the input used python
names: `PublisherDocumentColumn._from_openapi_data() missing 1 required
positional argument: 'children'`, whatever the node's `type` was.
In python-name mode (`_spec_property_naming=False`)
`get_possible_classes` replaced a discriminated composed model by all
its members without reading the discriminator. `attempt_convert_item`
then tried them in order, and the first member missing a required
argument raised a plain `TypeError`, which it does not catch. With JSON
names the composed class stays the only candidate and
`_new_from_openapi_data` dispatches on the discriminator.
`Base.to_api()` in the SDK builds client models with `camel_case=False`
(python names), so a discriminated composed model must resolve through
its discriminator in that mode too. `get_possible_classes` now keeps
such a model as the single candidate in both modes. Discriminated
`ModelNormal` classes and undiscriminated unions are unchanged, and a
member instance is still accepted, since `is_valid_type` already walks
the discriminator map.

Remove stale publisher files during a granular clone.
If a document is deleted on the server, clone_granular writes the current objects into the existing directory but leaves that document’s old YAML file in place. A later deploy loads the old file and restores the deleted document. The same issue applies to both template directories. Reconcile these three directories with the converted collections after all conversions succeed. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Tracked in PSDK-239: on master, gdc clone --only workspaces already leaves the files of removed objects in every collection folder, since only clone_all clears the target (clone.py:60) and clone_granular writes over it.
The three publisher folders follow that pattern; clearing folders changes behavior for every collection and both stores, so it lands there rather than here.

Validate the workspace before deleting the clone tree.
If a server document has a refused version, a full clone deletes the previous tree and then fails before writing workspace files. The prior workspace snapshot is lost without a replacement.
Fetch and validate the workspace before deleting the tree, and use the same fetched model for the clone.

If a server document has a refused version, a full clone deletes the previous tree and then fails before writing workspace files.
Tracked in PSDK-239: on master, clone_all already removes the target before it fetches anything (clone.py:58-68), so a failed fetch loses the old tree too; a refused document is one more failure at that point.
PSDK-239 moves every removal after the fetches and conversions succeed, the full clone included; the PR body names this limit under decision 5.

@AdamPenaz Thanks for the clarification. I verified that clone_all removes the existing tree before fetching clone data, and that this behavior predates the PR.
The document-version refusal adds another failure path to that existing risk. I agree that the broader fix can be handled in PSDK-239, with the limitation noted in this PR. Until the fix is available, back up the target tree before a full clone.
Would you also like a GitHub follow-up issue, or is PSDK-239 sufficient?

I compared this against master and found no new breaking behaviour. The gooddata-sdk suite passes on this branch, and the model_utils template change parses ParameterDefinition the same way as on master. That covers a valid, an unknown and a missing discriminator. The three comments below are all minor and optional.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Not a blocker, since CatalogDeclarativeParameter.content already behaves the same way through Base.from_dict. Once a document has been read, period holds the client's Python attribute names, so {"from": "2026-01-01"} becomes {'_from': datetime.date(2026, 1, 1)}. Code using doc.period["from"] raises KeyError. A document built by hand with "from" is also not equal to the same document read back. _from is further from the API shape than the snake_case keys in parameters, so a follow-up ticket may be worth it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Tracked in PSDK-241. A small converter on CatalogDeclarativePublisherDocument would fix period here, but CatalogDeclarativeParameter.content on master reads back the same way through Base.from_dict.
PSDK-241 fixes the base class once instead, so both fields, and any other the sweep finds, change shape together under one release note.

default=str turns any value that can't be written to JSON into its str(), not just dates. A future set, Decimal or client model would then be written as its repr without any error. A small default that handles only date/datetime with isoformat() and raises TypeError for anything else would keep that check.
_snapshot_json_default writes date/datetime as ISO strings and raises TypeError for anything else, so a set or Decimal fails the write instead of landing as its repr. The Langfuse default=str calls are unchanged.

Nit: the six aac_*_to_declarative / declarative_*_to_aac wrappers repeat the same try/except. One helper such as _convert(fn, aac_type, obj, verb) would replace them, along with _read_error and _write_error. Feel free to ignore.
_convert(convert, aac_type, obj, direction) replaces the six try/excepts along with _read_error, _write_error and _describe; the error messages are unchanged.

The generated client names an attribute whose API name is a Python
keyword with a leading underscore (`from` becomes `_from`), while an
attrs class can only spell it with a trailing one (`from_`).
`Base._get_snake_dict` used `attrs.asdict`, which keeps the attrs
name, so the client took `from_` as an unknown extra property and the
request body silently lacked `from`.
`_get_snake_dict` now walks attrs fields itself and writes `<kw>_`
under `_<kw>` at every depth, keeping the old filtering of None and
private attributes. Only attrs field names are renamed: keys inside a
`dict` value, such as an analytics object's opaque `content`, are user
JSON and pass untouched. `to_dict`, `to_api` and the workspace
layout's `to_api(include_nested_structures)` all go through it.
No SDK attribute is named this way yet; the publisher document period
is the first.

Add CatalogDeclarativePublisherDocument,
CatalogDeclarativePublisherDocumentTemplate and
CatalogDeclarativePublisherDocumentPageTemplate, exported from
gooddata_sdk, and the documents, document_templates and page_templates
lists on CatalogDeclarativeAnalyticsLayer. A layout read from the API
or a dict now keeps its Publisher documents, document templates and
page templates through to_api() instead of dropping them.
A document's period is the typed CatalogPublisherDocumentPeriod, a
union of CatalogAbsolutePublisherDocumentPeriod (ISO dates) and
CatalogRelativePublisherDocumentPeriod (offsets in granularity units),
all three exported from gooddata_sdk. A structure hook on the global
converter dispatches on type, the way dashboard permissions do, so
nested reads through the analytics and workspace layouts are typed
too. Without it, a read handed back the generated client's names and
types (_from, datetime.date). The keyword field is from_, which Base
writes as the client's _from, so the request body carries from.
Content stays an opaque dict, so keys the SDK does not model survive
the round trip.
The document carries the created/modified author fields through
CatalogAnalyticsBaseMeta, like memory items. The templates carry no
author fields, because the layout API exposes none on them.
reports, reportTemplates, reportPageLayouts and computedAttributes are
still not modelled in the analytics layer, until LX-3244.

The analytics layer carries publisher documents, document templates
and page templates, but store_to_disk and load_from_disk ignored them,
so a layout written to disk and read back lost all three.
store_to_disk now writes them to three folders directly under
analytics_model/: documents/, document_templates/ and
page_templates/, one <id>.yaml per object, the same way as metrics
or parameters. load_from_disk reads them back. A folder stored before
this change, without the three folders, still loads, with the three
lists empty; a document YAML without the author fields loads with
them unset.

11.66.0 is the first stable release of gooddata-code-convertors with
the v2 publisher convertors for documents, document templates and
page templates, which Analytics-as-Code needs to clone and deploy
them. uv lock moves only the convertor entry, from 11.57.0 to
11.66.0, with the same dependencies.
On py314 in freshly built tox envs, the 27 existing AaC tests
(-k aac) pass, and the gooddata-eval suite, the other consumer of
the convertors, passes unchanged (2542 passed, 1 skipped by design).

gdc clone writes Publisher documents, document templates and page
templates to documents/, documentTemplates/ and pageTemplates/, and
gdc deploy sends them back, through the v2 publisher convertors of
gooddata-code-convertors.
The AaC form carries no author fields, so a clone then deploy
re-stamps the creator to the deploying user.
An object whose version is not "2" raises a ValueError naming its
type, id and version, on store and on load; so does any other refusal
by the convertor. Store converts all three types before it creates
the target folder, so refusing one of them writes nothing.
The folder names follow the layout keys until the gd CLI decides its
own (LX-3096).

An absolute-period Publisher document puts datetime.date values into
the declarative layer the snapshot is taken from, and json.dumps
refused them, so --snapshot-out failed on any workspace holding such
a document. The write now turns date and datetime values into ISO
strings and raises TypeError on any other value JSON cannot hold, so
a replayed snapshot never carries a silently stringified value.
Snapshots saved from now on carry documents.

The new service test seeds a workspace with one document, carrying
an absolute period and author fields, one document template and one
page template. It then reads, stores, loads and puts the analytics
model and checks that all three survive, the document with its four
author fields unchanged. The same scenario run against the SDK
before the document models leaves the workspace with no documents.
The backend omits documents, documentTemplates and pageTemplates
from layout responses when they are empty, while the SDK always
emits them. The two tests comparing the SDK dictionary with the raw
layout fill those keys on the raw side through one helper, and stay
exact on every other key. The expected layouts gain the three lists.
upload_demo_layout.py, which make load-staging runs, now treats a
201 from user creation as success, the status the backend returns
for it now; before, the layout load crashed on it.

The SDK now sends documents, documentTemplates and pageTemplates in
every analytics layout it puts, and the backend returns them, so the
15 cassettes that replay a layout read or put no longer matched. They
are re-recorded, and the document round-trip test gets its own
cassette.
All 16 were recorded on the python-sdk-dex staging environment with
ENABLE_METRIC_PERMISSIONS and ENABLE_VISUALIZATION_PERMISSIONS off,
and are committed as recorded, unedited. With those flags on, the
backend adds grants on metrics and visualization objects and the
metricExtensions and visualizationObjectExtensions lists, which the
SDK does not model yet (PSDK-236), and the raw-layout tests fail on
them. Dashboard grants are recorded as returned.
A separate recording on a local stack agrees with these on every
interaction and on everything the tests assert. It differs only in
values no test reads: the organization's region, dataCenter and
allowedOrigins fields, the content type and type field of not-found
errors, and the content-length header.

Record for the next contributor the rule the publisher document
period settled: a field the generated client types as a model gets
its own Catalog class, because a plain dict read through the client
comes back with the client's Python names and value types. The entry
names the pattern (a Union behind a global_converter structure hook,
a keyword field spelled from_), the one exception by convention (an
analytics object's content stays an opaque dict), and the check to
run after regenerating the client, since a regeneration once typed
Automation.metadata without anyone noticing.
