engine: the memory setting holds the whole run, not only its plan - #213
Builds on #212 - merge that one first. The first four commits here are #212's (bb9d52d3, 5947b5dd, 33e54e7d, a3186253). This pull request is the last two: f66720f0 and 9f4b94f1.
What changes for a user
--memory and Memory on the Preferences screen held only the plan to the setting. The rest of a run - the plan, the manifest entries, and what the writers throw away - was left to the Go collector's default, which lets the heap grow to about twice what is live. A run took about two and a half times what it held.
The setting is now also the Go runtime's memory limit (debug.SetMemoryLimit) for the whole run, from the moment a plan starts, so the manifest saved after the files is under it too. The limit is soft. Near it the collector runs more often and the run is slower, at most about twice as slow, because the collector takes no more than about half the processor (GC guide, memory limit). A run that needs more still gets it. Well under it nothing changes.
off, and a machine whose memory could not be read, give back the limit the process started with.
A lower GOMEMLIMIT wins over the setting.
Files come out byte for byte the same.
Measured
Docker, --memory=1g --memory-swap=1g --network none, tfg generate --format txt --size 4096b, --memory auto, Linux binary of each branch. Whether the system killed it was asked of Docker (State.OOMKilled):
Under GOMEMLIMIT with a probe, at 200 000 files, where the limit barely binds: the same collector work (19.2-19.6 s against 19.8-20.2 s of CPU, two runs each) and a lower peak. At 400 000 and 500 000 the live heap is past 512 MiB, and the collector works at its ceiling. That slowness is the price instead of the kill. At 600 000 the live heap alone is near the container's size and the run is still killed. That is outside this change.
Where it is set, and why only there
The limit belongs to the whole process, not to one run. The guards plan side by side in one test binary, some under a setting of a few megabytes. If the engine handed every plan's setting over, one guard would hold every guard beside it to it. So only a process that says it is the program's own hands it over. engine.OwnProcess() is called from both main functions, and PlanContext then calls debug.SetMemoryLimit beside the plan's own budget.
Guards
TestTheMemorySettingIsTheLimitTheRuntimeIsHanded: the number for auto, a size, off, a lower GOMEMLIMIT, and a machine that could not be asked. It sets no limit in the test process.
TestAPlanOutsideTheProgramsOwnProcessLeavesTheRuntimeAlone: a plan under 64 MB in the test binary leaves the runtime's limit unchanged. The guard asserts that 64 MB would have changed it.
TestTheCommandLineHoldsTheWholeRunToItsMemorySetting: the real binary under GOGC=off and GODEBUG=gctrace=1. Without a limit the collector never runs, and with --memory 48mb it does. Collections a plan forces to measure itself are marked (forced) and are not counted.
Five mutation entries. One existing entry is rewritten for the new line in PlanContext.
Not held by a guard: the line in the window's main. The window binary needs a display to plan a run, and the line is the same call.
The --memory setting now applies across the full command-line run. Automatic mode uses at least 2 GiB, and plans that exceed the configured limit are refused.
Runs free memory more often as they approach the limit, which can slow progress. A run may still use more memory than the limit requires.
Performance
Large runs use less memory when planning and writing manifests. In a 1 GB container, a 200,000-file run can now complete.
Saving the manifest built the whole document in memory, and an indented
copy of it, while every entry was still held. At 100 000 text files the
save peaked at 9.3 KB a file against 4.0 KB for writing every file, and
a run of 200 000 in a container of 1 GB was killed after its last file
with no manifest written. Encode now writes the document with no entries
cut where its list is, and the entries between, one at a time. A guard
holds the bytes to encoding/json's own rendering and another fails when
the document reaches its writer in one piece.

Grown by append, a plan of a million text files took 1.9-2.2 GB from the
system for 0.94 GB of plan, because every doubling leaves the last array
to the collector. Reserved, it took 1.2 GB with five collections instead
of fourteen. The reservation never passes the memory setting's ceiling
for the plan and is not made for a run past the file ceiling, which the
loop refuses as before. A guard holds the plan's capacity to its length.
Mutation entries for this and for the manifest written an entry at a
time, and the changelog entry for both.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Reserved before the first target, a million files asking for a size
their format cannot make were refused at the first file after taking
441-450 MB, against 27-30 MB before. The size of the reservation is
still worked out before the targets are walked, and the list is now
taken when the first file has passed every check, with Ctrl+C asked
just before. That refusal is back to 26-28 MB, and a plan of a million
text files still peaks at 1.2 GB rather than 2.
A guard holds what planning allocates when the first file is refused.
A mutation entry for the context check is narrowed to its own place,
since the new check made its pattern appear twice.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…loop
The block that takes the list at the first file was nested three deep
inside the loop over files, which made it the fiftieth function at that
depth against a ceiling of 49. The ceiling is a ratchet, so the block
moved into startList instead of the number moving up. Behaviour is the
same: the list is taken once, at the first file that passed its checks,
with Ctrl+C asked first.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The memory setting held the plan to it and left the rest of a run - the
plan itself, the manifest entries and what the writers throw away - to
the collector's default, which lets the heap grow to about twice what
is live. In a container of 1 GB a run of 400 000 text files under auto
was killed by the system.
The setting is now handed to the Go runtime as the process's memory
limit, from the point a plan starts, so the manifest saved after the
writing is under it too. The limit is soft: close to it the collector
runs more often and the run is slower, and a run that needs more still
gets it. The same container now writes 500 000.
Only a process that says it is the program's own hands it over - both
main functions call engine.OwnProcess. Any other caller of the engine
leaves the runtime alone, because the limit belongs to the whole
process. Off, and a machine whose memory could not be read, give back
the limit the process started with, and a lower GOMEMLIMIT wins.

Walkthrough
The change applies configured memory limits to owned CLI and GUI processes, bounds planned-file list allocation using target counts and the plan budget, and streams manifest entries while preserving encoded JSON bytes. It also updates memory-setting help, translations, and changelog entries, and adds tests for runtime limits, plan reservation, and manifest output.
engine.OwnProcess() records the starting runtime limit. Planning passes the resolved limits to the runtime, and MemoryLimits.ForRuntime bounds the applied limit by the starting limit. Help text, GUI translations, and changelog entries describe memory-setting behavior.
Bound planned-file list allocation internal/engine/engine.go, internal/engine/planmemory.go, internal/engine/plantarget.go, internal/guard/planreserve_test.go, internal/guard/mutation/entries.py
Planning estimates list capacity from target counts and the plan budget. It allocates the list after a file passes its checks and cancellation is checked. Tests cover refusal and successful reservation cases.
Manifest.Encode writes nonempty file lists entry by entry and preserves the existing indented JSON bytes. Tests compare output with encoding/json and check that large output is not written as one large slice.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
The reviewed diff adds no CLAUDE.md, CLAUDE.local.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env files. Searches found no credentials, private URLs, absolute local paths, personal email addresses, internal hostnames/IPs, or debug-print/breakpoint code. The runtime/debug calls and GODEBUG=gctrace test setting are purposeful memory-limit implementation and test instrumentation, not leftover debug output.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
The GUI-related changes only update Preferences memory text/locales and call engine.OwnProcess() in cmd/tfg-gui/main.go. The diff adds no colors, fonts, sizes, margins, padding, corner radii, or duplicated controls.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No clear performance problem was introduced. Plan reservation performs one pass over targets and initializes the list once. Manifest encoding processes entries linearly through a fixed 64 KiB buffer. GUI planning, file generation, and manifest saving run in worker goroutines, not on the UI thread. No per-item external call, polling loop, or O(n²) processing was found.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
No custom-check failure is introduced. The changed code adds memory-limit handling and streamed manifest encoding; it adds no asset lookup, culture-sensitive parsing, network call, admin request, destructive action, or settings-file write. Manifest saves still use the existing temporary reservation, Sync, and atomic publish sequence. The GUI entry-point change only calls engine.OwnProcess(). Existing GUI run work remains on its worker with progress, busy-state double-execution protection, cancellation, and close-time waiting.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
No unsafe file parsing or serialization was introduced. The changed manifest writer uses Go's encoding/json APIs (json.NewEncoder and json.MarshalIndent), which quote JSON strings and do not execute values or formulas. The changed locale files contain only static JSON text. Existing manifest reads remain bounded by readAtMost at MaxBytes before json.Unmarshal, and existing checkPaths containment checks are unchanged. No changed code adds XML, YAML, CSV/XLSX, archive, external-entity, arbitrary-type, or path-following behavior.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The PR does not modify network filters, proxies, firewalls, system time, process hooks/injection, Windows services, registry, or drivers. It only sets the Go runtime memory limit within the application process, so this check is not applicable.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
No resource leak is introduced by the reviewed changes. Manifest.Encode uses a bounded 64 KiB bufio.Writer and one marshaled entry at a time; manifest file closure and reservation cleanup remain handled by saveReserved and Reservation.Save on success and error paths. Plan reservation stores only the required plan slice. OwnProcess changes the process memory limit intentionally and does not allocate a growing resource. No new timer, subscription, unbounded cache, or uncancellable goroutine was added; the CLI signal goroutine and signal cleanup are unchanged.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
No custom-check failure found. The description covers the six commits: manifest streaming, plan reservation/timing, and process-wide runtime memory, including the GUI and CLI entry points. The changed behavior is documented in README.md, CHANGELOG.md, CLI help, and English/Polish Preferences text. Manifest.Encode keeps the existing signature and manifest bytes are guarded against encoding/json, so no backward-incompatible API or data-format change is introduced. New helpers are placed in the existing core/engine/manifest layers; no duplicate implementation or architecture bypass is evident.
Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
The PR adds tests for manifest streaming, plan reservation, runtime-limit selection, non-owned engine processes, and the CLI. It also changes cmd/tfg-gui/main.go to call engine.OwnProcess(), which changes runtime memory behavior for GUI runs. No test covers that GUI entry-point wiring; the PR description explicitly states that this line is not covered. The test diff does not show weakened assertions or unjustified test deletion.
Resolution
Add a headless test for the GUI entry point, or refactor process ownership into a testable entry-point helper and test that both cmd/tfg and cmd/tfg-gui invoke it before gui.Run. Keep the existing CLI and engine behavior tests.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
The new memory text is ambiguous and internally misleading. README.md:348, internal/cli/memoryflag.go:26-27, and the English GUI text at internal/gui/text/locale/en.json:757 say “comes close to it” and “needs more still gets it” without naming memory or the limit. CHANGELOG.md:22-24 also says “The whole run keeps to it,” which suggests a hard limit, then says the plan is refused above it. The implementation is described as a soft runtime limit, so users need explicit wording.
Resolution
Replace the repeated wording with: “Near this memory limit, the program frees memory more often, which can slow the run. The limit is soft, so a run that needs more memory can exceed it.” In the changelog, use: “The whole run uses it as a soft limit. Near the limit, the program frees memory more often, so the run can be slower. A plan that exceeds the limit is refused, and auto never goes below 2 GiB.” Apply the equivalent explicit wording to the Polish translation at internal/gui/text/locale/pl.json:152, for example: “Gdy przebieg zbliża się do tego limitu, program częściej zwalnia pamięć, co może spowolnić przebieg. Limit jest miękki, więc przebieg, który potrzebuje więcej pamięci, może go przekroczyć.”

## What a change has to satisfy
- **Every change in behaviour comes with a test that fails without it.** A green
suite is not evidence on its own. The question to answer in the pull request
is "which test would go red if this change were undone". Each test in
`internal/guard` is also broken on purpose by an entry in
`internal/guard/mutation/entries.py`, and the `mutation` check on a pull
request runs the entries the change reaches. A new test needs an entry there,
or a line in `internal/guard/mutationcoverage_test.go` saying why it has none.

breaking change, because it turns other people's test suites red. It is

The command line is **English only** and stays that way, translations included.
It goes into scripts and CI logs that other people read, and a message that
changes language with the machine it ran on is a message nobody can search for.

## Translations
Four things to know before you start:
- **A placeholder such as `{{.Count}}` has to stay spelled exactly that way.**
It is where a number or a name is put in. You may move it inside the sentence.

## What a change has to satisfy
- **Words a user reads are English, with a flat hyphen and no semicolons.** That
covers the README, the changelog, `--help`, every message, and every comment
in the code. A test enforces the punctuation.

## What a change has to satisfy
- **A file is the size that was asked for, to the byte, or it is an error.**
Never a size close to it, never a quiet rounding. A batch of ten thousand
files is not something anybody checks by hand.

The refusal message uses an accurate file count and measured size.
The list reservation occurs after the memory baseline and is part of the plan memory being measured. The refusal path reports that measured heap growth as Used and passes the current len(pl.out) as Files. One file can therefore accompany a large Used value without making either reported value inaccurate.

Identify the entry when encoding fails.
If File.Properties contains a value that JSON cannot encode, this return gives the caller no entry number. A failed manifest save is difficult to diagnose when the manifest has thousands of entries. Wrap the error with the entry number and %w. File.Properties accepts values through map[string]any. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per path instructions: “Every returned error must be handled or explicitly justified; wrap with %w and context.”

Review comment at @internal/manifest/encode.go around lines 65 - 66:
Wrap the error from json.MarshalIndent in the m.Files[i] encoding loop with
context identifying the entry number, preserving the original error with %w. Use
the manifest’s displayed entry numbering convention.

Both are written once, by the main function, before it starts anything
that plans, so a sync.Once and an atomic defended against a caller that
does not exist - and put concurrency in a file the concurrency guard had
not been told about.

The window binary needs a display to plan anything, so its main was the
one line of the memory limit nothing held. Read from its source: the call
is a statement of main and comes before gui.Run.

"As a run comes close to it" followed a sentence about the plan, and
"needs more" did not say more of what. The changelog said the run keeps
to the setting without saying a run that needs more still gets it.
The stored Preferences pictures carry the longer sentence.

Both sides held #212's commits. The one conflict was in the mutation
entries, where this branch had rewritten an entry #212 added.

--memoryand Memory on the Preferences screen held only the plan to the setting. The rest of a run - the plan, the manifest entries, and what the writers throw away - was left to the Go collector's default, which lets the heap grow to about twice what is live. A run took about two and a half times what it held. The setting is now also the Go runtime's memory limit (
debug.SetMemoryLimit) for the whole run, from the moment a plan starts, so the manifest saved after the files is under it too. The limit is soft. Near it the collector runs more often and the run is slower, at most about twice as slow, because the collector takes no more than about half the processor (GC guide, memory limit). A run that needs more still gets it. Well under it nothing changes.off, and a machine whose memory could not be read, give back the limit the process started with.GOMEMLIMITwins over the setting.Measured

GOMEMLIMITwith a probe, at 200 000 files, where the limit barely binds: the same collector work (19.2-19.6 s against 19.8-20.2 s of CPU, two runs each) and a lower peak. At 400 000 and 500 000 the live heap is past 512 MiB, and the collector works at its ceiling. That slowness is the price instead of the kill. At 600 000 the live heap alone is near the container's size and the run is still killed. That is outside this change.Where it is set, and why only there
The limit belongs to the whole process, not to one run. The guards plan side by side in one test binary, some under a setting of a few megabytes. If the engine handed every plan's setting over, one guard would hold every guard beside it to it. So only a process that says it is the program's own hands it over.

It sets no limit in the test process.TestAPlanOutsideTheProgramsOwnProcessLeavesTheRuntimeAlone: a plan under 64 MB in the test binary leaves the runtime's limit unchanged. The guard asserts that 64 MB would have changed it.TestTheCommandLineHoldsTheWholeRunToItsMemorySetting: the real binary underGOGC=offandGODEBUG=gctrace=1. --memorysetting now applies across the full command-line run. Automatic mode uses at least 2 GiB, and plans that exceed the configured limit are refused.
