Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Calls now handle omitted optional arguments consistently, while still reporting errors for missing required or excess arguments.
    • By-reference arguments now update the corresponding supplied arguments directly. Changes made before a call fails are not rolled back.
    • Calls no longer copy argument values back into the supplied array after invocation.

Walkthrough

Reflective and machine method calls now use updated argument preparation rules. The changes cover omitted and excess arguments, default parameters, by-reference arguments, and argument updates after reflective calls. A test checks a dynamic reflective call.

Changes: Method Argument Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Machine call argument preparation
src/ScriptEngine/Machine/MachineInstance.cs
Skipped arguments become null. Fixed-signature calls pad omitted positions, validate defaults and argument counts, and adjust values for by-reference parameters. Dynamic-signature calls retain the popped arguments.
Reflective argument preparation
src/OneScript.StandardLibrary/Reflector.cs, tests/reflector.os
Reflective calls use indexed references for arguments and no longer copy values back after invocation. The added test checks that a dynamic call updates the first array element while preserving the second element and the original variable.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Refactor

Possibly related issues

  • EvilBeaver/OneScript#1797 — The issue concerns omitted optional arguments in dynamic method calls; this change updates argument handling for dynamic calls.

Suggested reviewers: sfaqer

Merge Risk: Low · up to e8bde

A reflective call that removes an argument before updating a later parameter can fail. This narrow case is mergeable with owner awareness.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to c5cf6

The changes can make a call report failure after it has already changed state, and can prevent native calls from receiving optional-parameter defaults. These are bounded runtime risks; increased privileges or exposure across tenants were not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Copy-back assumes the caller's argument array cannot grow during invocation. A supported counterexample is CallMethod(process, a, "Add", a), where a initially contains one value: Add grows a to two elements, then copy-back indexes beyond the one-element invocation snapshot. The method therefore changes state successfully but reports failure. The base implementation bounded copy-back by the snapshot length. This weakens failure containment and can make caller retries repeat completed effects.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: Fixed-signature object calls now retain the skipped-parameter marker for explicitly skipped optional arguments. Previously these slots became null. NativeApiComponent substitutes defaults only for null, so the marker reaches CLR conversion and throws before the native method executes. This breaks the invocation contract across the managed/native boundary; the resulting failure remains contained by the native parameter buffer's disposal scope.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated reflection failure requires access to the existing reflector and a mutable target array; no additional privilege is needed beyond invoking that exposed method. Its immediate effects are caller-array mutation and invocation failure. The native regression affects fixed-signature calls with explicitly skipped optional parameters and fails before the native method body. Wider host, tenant, or service impact depends on embedding behavior not supplied here.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Invocation continues through the existing target method lookup and runtime-context dispatch. Machine array reuse operates on fresh per-call arrays rather than a caller-owned container. The inspected native path still sizes its parameter buffer from the native declaration; the optimization does not change the selected native object or method.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Native marshalling occurs inside disposal scopes for the parameter buffers. The machine wraps ordinary CLR failures as script exceptions and restores the operand stack when transferring to a script exception handler. These controls contain call failures but do not undo mutations already completed by the target.

Рефлектор = Новый Рефлектор;
Массив = Новый Массив;

// Контрольный вызов: должен добавить Неопределено.
Рефлектор.ВызватьМетод(Массив, "Добавить", Новый Массив);

// Контрпример: тот же вызов без массива аргументов.
Рефлектор.ВызватьМетод(Массив, "Добавить");

ArrayImpl.Add(IValue value = null)

ArrayImpl.Add.

Рефлектор.ВызватьМетод(Массив, "Получить");

Рефлектор = Новый Рефлектор;
Аргументы = Новый Массив;
Аргументы.Добавить(123);

Рефлектор.ВызватьМетод(Аргументы, "Добавить", Аргументы);

  1. GetArgsToPass создаёт argsToPass длиной 1.
  2. ArrayImpl.Add

Length.

Native API

Компонента.DefaultParam();  // Нет переданных аргументов.

  • NativeApiComponent.

Restore skipped arguments only in the compiled-block adapter.

Do not reverse PopArguments globally. Fixed-signature calls use null for omitted parameters. NativeApiComponent.SetDefValues substitutes defaults only when arguments[i] == null.

Dynamic calls pass the array unchanged to DelegateAction. Its BslValue[] adapter is used by CompiledBlock and currently forwards null to the generated typed conversion. A typed string conversion then dereferences null.

parameter.DefaultValue(BslSkippedParameterValue.Instance);
// кажется что значение не нужно в данном кейсе использования
// если что - раскомментировать
// NativeApiProxy.GetParamDefValue(_object, methodNumber, i, variant =>
// {
// var value = (BslPrimitiveValue)new NativeApiVariant(variant).GetValue();
// parameter.DefaultValue(value);
// });
