Why

complete_audit_v2 re-hashed a 1.5 GB checkpoint on every span() while holding the store lock (joinbase-6 run2: lock held >23 min, beacon frozen, audit window expired).

What

Per-instance memoization of state roots/windows/traces/shapes in IslandParty (island_bisect.py) + tests. store.py untouched; implementation_hash pin unchanged (island_bisect.py not in paths).
At od-base size: 2,444 chain builds / 4,888 checkpoint loads -> 1 / 2 (about 5 s vs about 3.6 h extrapolated).

Evidence

Independent review (Lens): MERGE, 0 B / 0 I / 3 M, mutants killed, oracle equivalence on 5 party types. livrables/lens/2026-10-25_hypertrain-complete-audit-v2-span-cost.md. ruff/format/mypy clean.

Risk / rollback

Residual lock time in IslandParty.published() (~7.4 GB) unmeasured; follow-up. Store-level test replays a 134 s scenario (M-3, to mark slow). Rollback: revert the 2 commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Repeated audit checks now reuse previously calculated checkpoint and trace results, reducing redundant processing.
    • Audit dispute sizing and adjudication outcomes remain consistent with uncached checks, including for malformed retraces and missing optimizer state.

complete_audit_v2 sizes dispute spans inside the store lock with
party.span() in nested loops. Every span() re-derived window 1, which
re-hashed its hook chain and unpacked and hashed two full rank-0
checkpoints. At od-base (H=64, J=16, 2 ranks, 609 spans per window)
that is 2,444 window() calls and 4,888 checkpoint loads of 1.49 GB,
about 3.6 h of lock time. On the joinbase-6 TEST round the lock was
held for over 23 min, the beacon froze and the audit window expired.

IslandParty now memoizes, per instance, the state root per leaf, the
hook chain per window, the "has committed hooks" scan per leaf and the
span ends per resolved window. A party wraps immutable published
artifacts, so nothing can go stale. _shape still resolves its source
window on every call, so a leaf retraced later is answered exactly as
before, including the refusal when that leaf's checkpoint is unusable.
window() returns a copy of the cached chain. Sizing an od-base audit
now takes one chain build and two checkpoint loads (about 5 s).

Rejected:
- Moving party construction and sizing out of _tx() in
complete_audit_v2. That edits a method whose AST is bound into the
service implementation_hash and its reviewed pins. It also lets the
round clock advance mid-computation, so an honest completion could
expire into a 409, and concurrent completes could each hold a
  ~7.4 GB party.
- A module-level cache, which would pin checkpoint blobs for the
  lifetime of the process.

Still under the lock: IslandParty.published() (validate_artifacts and
reading every checkpoint), under 2 min in execute_audit_v2 per the
joinbase-6 report.

No test noticed that sizing dispute spans re-hashed checkpoints: the
tiny decoder model is fast either way, and nothing checked the stored
step/layer/op spans.

tests/auditor/test_island_bisect_memo.py:
- Counts IslandParty checkpoint loads and hook hashing over the full
window/layer/op query grid. Each checkpoint loads once, each hook is
  chained once.
- Runs the store's sizing statements on a synthetic party with the
  od-base hook geometry (H=64, J=16, 2 ranks, 44,038 hooks and
  609 spans in window 1). Expects spans (4, 609, 1542), two checkpoint
loads, window 1 derived only, under 5 s.
- Compares every dispute query, refusal and retrace count with a
verbatim copy of the unmemoized origin/main methods. Covers
committed, lazy, ragged, bad-retrace and bare-checkpoint parties,
  plus FRAUD and MATCH adjudication.
- Checks that memos never leak between parties.

tests/challenge/test_complete_audit_v2_cost.py reruns the real tiny
audit scenario of test_audit_deadline_v2 with loads counted per
complete_audit_v2 call. Only the first accepted complete sizes spans;
it loads window 1's two checkpoints once each (20 loads before). It
also asserts that the stored contest spans equal the unmemoized
sizing of the same publication. The scenario is reused rather than
copied because its setup is about 280 lines.

The load and scope tests fail on origin/main. The oracle comparisons
pass there by construction. They catch wrong memo keys, a per-leaf
_shape cache and global caches (checked by in-memory mutation).

Walkthrough

IslandParty caches checkpoint roots, traced window results, and leaf window shapes. Cached window calls return a fresh list of the cached hash chain. Tests compare dispute queries and adjudication with an unmemoized oracle and measure checkpoint loading during audit sizing.

Changes: IslandParty memoization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cache checkpoint and window calculations

  • CortexLM/hypertrain issue 28 describes lock-heavy od-base service work that can leave beacon gaps. This change reduces repeated checkpoint loads and hook hashing during dispute-span sizing, but does not address the other service costs described.
Merge Risk: Low · up to b983c

Mark the long audit test as slow so explicit slow-test runs include it and runs excluding slow tests omit it. This is a bounded test-workflow issue, not a blocker to merging.

Mark this end-to-end test as slow.

The test has no slow marker, and calling the imported scenario function does not transfer that function's marker. Add the marker and import pytest.
