refactor: extract helpers for dupl clones, and tighten the task-oriented docs plan - #451
Stacked on #450 (base docs-metrics-architecture-inventory). It goes out in the same release. When #450 merges, retarget this PR to main.

d01f25eb refactor: extract helpers for the clones dupl finds. dupl, run below golangci's 150-token threshold, found copies that differ only in a type or one argument. Each now has one body:
specOrStatusChanged: the shared watch predicate behind the KubeProvider, GitBranch and mirrored-GitTarget watches.
reconcileHeldClaim: the FluxClaim and ArgoCDClaim reconcile, generic over the claim type.
distinctByKey: the typeset GVK→GVRs and GVR→GVKs indexes.
putKeyed: the store for the five keyed fact-index tiers.
e2e: setupWindowedDeploymentPipeline and eventuallyCommitsConfigMapFile.
Twins that read better side by side are left alone.
bc2031b8 docs: tighten the task-oriented docs plan and gate its published sources. This is the second review pass on docs/future/task-oriented-docs-and-website.md:
Azure DevOps has no GitReceiver type, so its guide states the fallback detection latency and the generic-hmac relay option.
audit-setup/ and the layout/ specs are placed in the inventory.
The three rows that split bi-directional.md are merged into one.
The "recorded walkthrough" criterion is now a CI job.
The published sources that still fail Vale are listed as Phase 2 work.
The doc is trimmed from 366 to 290 lines.
It also adds the nine inventoried sources that already pass Vale to .docs-lint-scope.
Validation
task lint-docs: 0 errors.
The local e2e run was skipped. CI runs e2e on this PR.
Act on the second review of the plan:
- Azure DevOps has no GitReceiver type, so its guide states the fallback
detection latency and the generic-hmac relay option.
- Place audit-setup/ (published as the attribution k3s example) and cite
the layout/ specs as the source for the manifest-layouts reader guide.
- Merge the three inventory rows that split bi-directional.md into one.
- Replace the "recorded walkthrough" criterion with a CI job.
- List the published sources that still fail Vale as Phase 2 work.
- Drop the branch-housekeeping section and the repeated bi-directional
and architecture text (366 to 290 lines).
Add the nine inventoried sources that already pass Vale to
.docs-lint-scope, so the gate the plan requires starts now.

dupl (mibk/dupl) below golangci's 150-token threshold found a handful of
copies that differ only in a type or one argument. Each now has one body:
- specOrStatusChanged: the generic "create/delete, or an update that moved
the generation or a status summary" predicate behind the KubeProvider,
GitBranch and mirrored-GitTarget watches.
- reconcileHeldClaim: the FluxClaim and ArgoCDClaim reconcile, generic over
the claim type with its hold function passed in.
- distinctByKey: the typeset GVK->GVRs and GVR->GVKs indexes.
- putKeyed: the five keyed fact-index tiers' store, keeping the
count/order invariant in one place beside removeKeyed.
- e2e: setupWindowedDeploymentPipeline for the two CommitRequest suites,
and eventuallyCommitsConfigMapFile for the quickstart ConfigMap flow.
Twins that read better side by side (WatchRule/ClusterWatchRule setup,
watch/list openers, table tests per kind) are left as they are.

The pull request revises a documentation and website plan and adds its Markdown files to the prose-lint scope. It also consolidates controller predicates and data helpers, and extracts reusable setup and polling helpers in E2E tests.
Changes: Documentation and website plan
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Reader paths and guide inventory docs/future/task-oriented-docs-and-website.md
The plan distinguishes capture-only setup from bi-directional coordination, updates task guides and the guide inventory, and defines a reusable guide structure.
Operations, push notifications, and attribution docs/future/task-oriented-docs-and-website.md
The plan specifies monitoring and recovery topics, push-notification setup and fallback behavior, Azure DevOps limitations, and attribution distinctions.
Website requirements and completion checks docs/future/task-oriented-docs-and-website.md, .docs-lint-scope
The plan defines publication, link and route checks, implementation phases, and completion criteria. The lint-scope allowlist adds nine documentation paths.
FluxClaim and ArgoCDClaim now use a shared reconciliation path for deletion, retirement, configuration checks, and the claim-specific hold function.
Dependency watch predicates

Summary
Shared spec and status change checks internal/controller/dependency_watches.go, internal/controller/gittarget_controller.go, internal/controller/gittarget_dependency_status.go
A generic predicate handles event and change checks. GitTarget-related predicates pass their readiness fields to that shared logic.
ConfigButler/gitops-reverser#450: Adds a Markdown source to the same prose-lint allowlist and relates to the website documentation plan.
ConfigButler/gitops-reverser#437: Implements Argo CD automated-sync holding, which is handled through the shared claim reconciliation path in this pull request.
ConfigButler/gitops-reverser#432: Adds GitReceiver push delivery, which the documentation plan covers in its push-notification setup and verification guidance.

official Ginkgo v2 documentation BeforeAll failure AfterAll runs

<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last month; You can do this by running `go install github.com/onsi/ginkgo/v2/ginkgo` from your package. ... However, if a failure occurs in a `BeforeAll`, Ginkgo will immediately run the `AfterAll` (to clean up) and then rerun the `BeforeAll`. ... The `--sleep-on-failure=<DURATION>` flag pauses a spec after it fails but before its teardown runs, leaving the system live so you can perform forensics:
#### Failure Handling in Ordered Containers
Normally, when a spec fails, Ginkgo moves on to the next spec. This is possible because Ginkgo assumes, by default, that all specs are independent. However, `Ordered` containers explicitly opt in to a different behavior. Spec independence cannot be guaranteed in `Ordered` containers, so Ginkgo treats failures differently.
When a spec in an `Ordered` container fails, all subsequent specs are skipped. Ginkgo will then run any `AfterAll` node closures to clean up after the specs.
You can override this behavior by decorating an `Ordered` container with `ContinueOnFailure`. This is useful in cases where `Ordered` is being used to provide shared expensive set up for a collection of specs. When `ContinueOnFailure` is set, Ginkgo will continue running specs even if an earlier spec in the `Ordered` container has failed. If, however, a `BeforeAll` or `OncePerOrdered` `BeforeEach` node has failed, Ginkgo will skip all subsequent specs as the setup for the collection specs is presumed to have failed.
It("can save books to the central library", FlakeAttempts(3), func() {
// this spec has been marked as flaky and will be retried up to 3 times
})
It("can save books locally", func() {
// this spec must always pass on the first try
})
})
`
Ginkgo's retry behavior generally works as you'd expect with most specs, however, there is some complexity when `FlakeAttempts` is applied to `Ordered` containers. In brief, Ginkgo generally guarantees that `BeforeAll` and `AfterAll` node closures only run once - but `FlakeAttempts` can modify this behavior. If a failure occurs within a subject node in an `Ordered` container (i.e. in an `It`) then Ginkgo will rerun that `It` but not the `BeforeAll` or `AfterAll`. However, if a failure occurs in a `BeforeAll`, Ginkgo will immediately run the `AfterAll` (to clean up) and then rerun the `BeforeAll`.
Stepping back - it bears repeating: you should use `FlakeAttempts` judiciously. The best approach to managing flaky spec suites is to debug flakes early and resolve them. More often than not they are telling you something important about your architecture. In a world of competing priorities and finite resources, however, `FlakeAttempts` provides a means to explicitly accept the technical debt of flaky specs and move on.
Failures that occur in setup and subject nodes (`It`, `BeforeEach`, `BeforeAll`, ...) trigger the pause; failures inside teardown nodes do not, since the system is already being torn down at that point.
The pause is interruptible: pressing `^C` (or otherwise interrupting the suite) ends the pause early and proceeds to run the spec's cleanup nodes - it does not skip teardown. This means you can pause indefinitely (e.g. `--sleep-on-failure=24h`), inspect the system at your leisure, and then press `^C` once to resume and let Ginkgo clean up.
Specs that pass are never paused, and the flag has no effect when set to `0` (the default).
`--sleep-on-failure` is a debugging aid intended for interactive, serial runs and is only supported in serial mode. Because Ginkgo's parallelism is multi-process, a single failing spec cannot meaningfully freeze the whole system, so combining `--sleep-on-failure` with `-p`/`--procs` is rejected with a configuration error. Run the specific failing spec serially (for example with `--focus` and without `-p`) when you want to use it.

<excerpt>citeturn0search1 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 2 weeks ago; When a failure occurs Ginkgo marks the current spec as failed and moves on to the next spec. ... here we only set up the `libraryClient` once before all the specs run, and then tear it down once all the specs complete. ... `go run github.com/onsi/ginkgo/v2/ginkgo -r -p --randomize-all --randomize-suites --fail-on-pending --fail-on-empty --keep-going --cover --coverprofile=cover.profile --race --trace --json-report=report.json --timeout=TIMEOUT --poll-progress-after=Xs --poll-progress-interval=Ys
This allows Ginkgo to stop the current closure in its tracks - no subsequent assertions or code in the closure will run. Ginkgo is quite opinionated about this behavior - if an assertion has failed then the current spec is not in an expected state and subsequent assertions will likely fail. This fast-fail approach is especially useful when running slow complex integration tests. It cannot be disabled.
When a failure occurs in a `BeforeEach`, `JustBeforeEach`, or `It` closure Ginkgo halts execution of the current spec and cleans up by invoking any registered `AfterEach` or `JustAfterEach` closures (and any registered `DeferCleanup` closures if applicable). This is important to ensure the spec state is cleaned up.
Ginkgo orchestrates this behavior by rescuing the panic thrown by `Fail` and unwinding the spec. However, if your spec launches a goroutine that calls `Fail` (or, equivalently, invokes a failing Gomega assertion), there's no way for Ginkgo to rescue the panic that `Fail` throws. This will cause the suite to panic and no subsequent specs will run.
When a failure occurs Ginkgo marks the current spec as failed and moves on to the next spec. If, however, you'd like to stop the entire suite when the first failure occurs you can run `ginkgo --fail-fast`.
In addition to marking the current spec as failed, Ginkgo records and presents the location of the failure to help you pinpoint where to look to debug your specs. This is typically the line where the call to `Fail` was performed (or, if you're using Gomega, the line where the Gomega assertion failed). Sometimes, however, you need to control the reported location. For example, consider the case where you are using a helper function:
`/* === INVALID === */
func EnsureUserCanRead(book Book, user User) {
if book.Title == "Les Miserables" && user.Age <= 3 {
Fail("user is too young for this book") //A
}
}
It("can read books", func() {
EnsureUserCanRead(book, user) //B
user.Read(book)
})
`
Now, if the `EnsureUserCanRead` helper fails the location presented to the user will point to `//A`. #### Setup in Ordered Containers: BeforeAll and AfterAll
You can include all the usual setup nodes in an `Ordered` container however and they continue to operate in the same way. `BeforeEach` will run before every spec and `AfterEach` will run after every spec. This applies to all setup nodes in a spec's hierarchy. So `BeforeEach`/`AfterEach` nodes that are present outside the `Ordered` container will still run before and after each spec in the container.
There are, however, two new setup node variants that can be used within `Ordered` containers: `BeforeAll` and `AfterAll`.
`BeforeAll` closures will run exactly once before any of the specs within the `Ordered` container. `AfterAll` closures will run exactly once after the last spec has finished running. Here's an extension of our earlier example that illustrates how these nodes might be used:
`Describe("checking out a book", Ordered, func() {
var libraryClient *library.Client
var book *books.Book
var err error
BeforeAll(func() {
libraryClient = library.NewClient()
Expect(libraryClient.Connect()).To(Succeed())
})
It("can fetch a book from a library", func() {

<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last month; Update all your import statements from `import github.com/onsi/ginkgo` to `import github.com/onsi/ginkgo/v2`. ... These nodes will run just once - the `BeforeAll` will run before any ordered tests in the container run; the `AfterAll` will run after all the ordered tests in the container are finished.
Spec containers (i.e. `Describe` and `Context` blocks) can now be decorated with the `Ordered` decorator. Specs within `Ordered` containers will always run in the order they appear and will never be randomized. In addition, when running in parallel, specs in an `Ordered` containers will always run on the same process to ensure spec order is preserved. When a spec in an `Ordered` container fails, all subsequent specs in the container are skipped.
`Ordered` containers also support `BeforeAll` and `AfterAll` setup nodes. These nodes will run just once - the `BeforeAll` will run before any ordered tests in the container run; the `AfterAll` will run after all the ordered tests in the container are finished.
Ordered containers are documented in more details in the Ordered Container section of the documentation.
#### OncePerOrdered Decorator
The `OncePerOrdered` decorator can be applied to setup nodes and causes them to run just once around ordered containers. More details in the Setup around Ordered Containers: the OncePerOrdered Decorator section of the documentation.

Preserve cleanup names when setup fails.
If setup creates resources and a later assertion fails, setupWindowedDeploymentPipeline does not return. The BeforeAll closures leave their suite cleanup fields empty, but Ginkgo still runs AfterAll. The cleanup calls then receive empty names and cannot target the created resources.
Store each name in suite-owned state as setup progresses, or register cleanup when each resource is created.
